Blur part of an image
Sometimes the thing you want covered is not a face or a card number. A name on a parcel, a house across the road, a whiteboard, a screen in the background — for those, draw a box over it yourself.
This page opens the editor with the automatic categories left alone, so the only things covered are the ones you draw.
Works today, in your browser. Photos open in the editor and Word documents are checked for hidden data; either way the file is read on your device and never uploaded.
Drawing a box
Drag across the picture. The area is covered the moment you let go, and a small control appears to remove it again if you misjudged the drag.
Boxes are kept in the picture’s own coordinates rather than the screen’s, so resizing the window or working on a phone does not move them.
Choosing how it is covered
Blur for anything photographic, pixelation when you want the shape to stay readable, and a solid block for anything with words or numbers in it. The strength slider goes from a light touch to complete destruction of the detail.
A solid block can be black or cream. Cream reads as "removed" rather than "censored", which on a screenshot often looks less alarming and says the same thing.
What the automatic part found anyway
Even on this page the detectors still run, and the panel still shows what they found. They start switched off, so nothing is covered without you asking — but if the picture turns out to contain a card number you had not noticed, you will see it listed with a count beside it.
How to do it
- 1Open the pictureNothing is covered yet on this page.
- 2Drag over what you want hiddenAs many areas as you like.
- 3Pick a style, then saveSolid for words, blur for everything else.
Questions
Yes. Remove it with the small control on its corner, or use undo — there are fifty steps of history, and "Back to auto" resets everything.
Only if you leave the option ticked. It is a small mark in the corner, it is off with one click, and the file is identical either way apart from those pixels.
The covered pixels change, and the whole picture is encoded again — so it is not byte-for-byte identical to the original even outside the boxes. The hidden fields in the file, such as the location it was taken, are gone as a result.
