Auto-blur faces

Most editors make you find what to hide. This one starts with everything covered and asks what you want back, which is the safer way round for the same amount of clicking.

It matters most on the photographs you take quickly: a crowd, a party, a street. Those are the ones with somebody in them you never noticed.

Works today, in your browser. Photos open in the editor and Word documents are checked for hidden data; either way the file is read on your device and never uploaded.

Why automatic beats careful

People are good at spotting the subject of a photograph and poor at spotting everyone else in it. That is not carelessness, it is how attention works — the face you were photographing is the one you see when you look again.

Reversing the default fixes that. The faces you did not notice are already covered, and the ones you care about are the ones you will think to uncover.

How many faces, and where

The panel counts them: "Faces (4)", "Background faces (3)". If the number is higher than you expected, that is the point of running it. Each box is clickable, so a single face can be revealed without touching the rest.

What it costs you

The face model is about 12 MB and downloads once, the first time you ask for it. After that it is cached by your browser and the detection takes a second or two.

Nothing is uploaded in either direction — the model comes from our own servers rather than a third party’s, so no one else learns that you are editing a photograph.

How to do it

  1. 1Open a photoFaces are found and covered automatically.
  2. 2Check the countIf it found more faces than you expected, look again.
  3. 3Save the copyCovered pixels, and no location data.

Questions

  • Not yet — the editor takes one picture at a time, because the point is that you look at each result. Batch processing is on the list, and it will still run on your device.
